Chemotherapy involves the use of specialised anti-cancer drugs (cytostatic agents), which damage cells that divide rapidly. This includes cancer cells, but also healthy body cells such as hair follicle cells or cells of the mucous membranes. This can lead to side effects such as hair loss. The treatment acts throughout the body and thus also reaches cancer cells that have spread within the body.
