Tumour lysis syndrome is a potentially dangerous complication of cancer treatment. It occurs when many tumour cells are destroyed simultaneously and their components enter the bloodstream. This can happen at the start of successful cancer treatment, when the treatment takes effect. This can disrupt the balance of salts and minerals, leading to problems such as kidney dysfunction or cardiac arrhythmias.
