Cytokine release syndrome can occur when the immune system reacts strongly to certain immunotherapies. This leads to the release of large amounts of pro-inflammatory signalling molecules (cytokines). This can cause symptoms such as fever, a rapid drop in blood pressure, breathing difficulties and vomiting. In severe cases, cytokine release syndrome can be life-threatening.
