NCT West: Cologne / Essen
The West German Cancer Center (WTZ) in Essen and the Center for Integrated Oncology (CIO) in Cologne cooperate in the National Center for Tumor Diseases West. The two centers of excellence in oncology at the university hospitals in Essen and Cologne link all six university hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia via the 'Excellence Network Cancer Medicine NRW'. This ensures that the 18 million people living in Germany's most populous state have direct access to research into the latest diagnostic and treatment procedures at the NCT.
Supporting Institutions
The NCT West is supported by the University Hospitals of Essen and Cologne, the Universities of Duisburg-Essen and Cologne and the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ).

The qualification of the university hospitals in Essen and Cologne for the expanded NCT is based on decades of preparatory work. In addition, the Ministry of Culture and Science NRW (MKW) supported the joint focus on 'translational data sciences' and 'computational cancer biology' through targeted project funding. Further information can be found on the homepage of the CCCE NRW.
Main research areas
Essen and Cologne are internationally leading locations for cancer medicine and home to large national study groups. The NCT West focuses on clinical trial and research structures for precision diagnostics, local and systemic therapies, translational data science and computational cancer biology, which are closely linked to innovative, multidimensional characterization of the tumor, the host and their treatment responses. Prioritized disease programs at NCT West include lung cancer, lymphomas and leukemias, tumors of the digestive tract, prostate, familial breast and ovarian cancer and skin cancer. Rare diseases such as eye tumors, sarcomas and childhood cancers are also targeted at the NCT West.
